Double Chicken Please (& Thank You!)

Drinks: 8.5 | Atmosphere: 9 | Service: 7

There’s not a lot I can tell you about alcohol. With that said, I know when something is a “high-quality,” well-thought-out drink and when it’s cheap and simply there to get you drunk. Double Chicken is not the latter (duh).

Rated No. 1 bar in North America in May 2023 and No. 2 best bar in the world in October 2023 by The World’s 50 Best Bars, they obviously take their drinks seriously.

Oddly enough, I hadn’t heard of Double Chicken Please until this year—once from one of my bartender friends and again from a hedge fund guy I was seeing, who mentioned it a week later.

So, six months later, plus a few more of Hector talking about it, we finally went.

It was Hector’s last day (RIP work hubby, lmao), and lucky for him, I was in a weird mood and decided I was okay with waiting in a line that day (iykyk). The line was short, god bless. We waited maybe five minutes, which for a Saturday was crazy, before they let us into their “Free Range” standing area.

The most important thing to note was the interior. I fucking love when restaurants/ bars have a theme and execute it in a fun, tongue-in-cheek way while still maintaining sophistication, something Double Chicken Please did extremely well, something that I raved about to all my coworkers the next day and then told them they need to go see for themselves. Also, you can win me over almost immediately with wood-paneled walls and rustic ’70s decor. They really tied everything together for me with hen coop noises in the bathroom and the little pinball-style menu situation. Fun!

The drinks: I had two. The “first” drink I ordered was a Gilded Orchard—or, as I kept calling it, Double Orchid (I had worked a 10-hour shift beforehand, so please, no judgment). I used quotation marks because I only took one sip of it. Thankfully, I was tasked with surprising one of my friends with his drink order, and I got him a Double Bubble. When I realized I didn’t actually want the Gilded Orchard, he traded with me. So technically, my first drink was the Double Bubble.

And it’s not that the Gilded Orchard wasn’t good—let me make that clear. It was just that the combination of Hector’s mushroom dish (which I can’t find on their website) and its very strong, earthy smell mixed with the floral notes of the drink created this intense “freshly watered garden” situation that was not the vibe for me in that moment. So this is not the drink’s fault; if anything, the blame is on my extremely strong sense of smell.

The Double Bubble, on the other hand, was exactly what I wanted. Boba, a seafoam green liquid (the exact color I’m always trying to convince my friends to dye their hair), and a giant bubble on top. What else could a girl want?

I didn’t know what I wanted for my second drink, mostly because I wasn’t planning on having one, so I asked what the bartender recommended—specifically, the fruitiest drink I could order. He told me something I couldn’t hear, and I responded, “Yeah, sure. That sounds perfect,” because I love surprises (only in liquid or food form, though— otherwise I hate surprises).

The drink I ended up with was called Grapefruit With a Grudge, which felt very fitting (something that our group kept commenting on) as I wasn’t particularly happy about the location of Double Chicken Please. (I’m currently avoiding that specific street at all costs—iykyk) so I was a little grouchy… a little grudge-y. Grapefruit with a Grudge tasted like grapefruit and only grapefruit, which is dangerous for obvious reasons.

Overall, I had a great time and was honestly pleasantly surprised. I thought I was walking into an overhyped, way-too-dark, way-too-loud bar, but instead I was met with this little treat. And you know what? Double Chicken Please did the unthinkable and made me open to waiting in lines. I might even wait in a line this weekend for another bar I’ve heard amazing things about but avoided purely because of the threat of waiting in a line.

So bravo to you, Double Chicken Please.
